If life is like a box of chocolates, then UF is like a bag of Halloween candy. There are more diverse students, majors, and organizations than you could possibly count! So, in the spirit of Halloween, let’s take a look at what Halloween classics best describe some of UF’s many majors!
Biology/Chemistry/Psychology: M&M’s
You probably get more packs of M&M’s than anything else on Halloween, which is fitting because probably about half of the students you meet walking around campus are one of these majors. They are considered the traditional pre-med majors (and that’s coming from me, a pre-med biology major), but hey, nothing wrong with being a classic!
Engineering: Skittles
The only major you might see more often than biology or psychology are engineering students. If you didn’t know better, you might assume that they are all the same, but there’s more variety than you could possibly imagine! They are a foundation of every Halloween candy stash and a major part of UF’s student body.
Business: Candy Corn
People have very strong opinions about candy corn; they either absolutely love it, or they absolutely hate it. Plenty of jokes are made at business majors’ expense, but let’s face it: you can’t have Halloween without candy corn, and you can’t have… well, a lot of things without business majors.
Nursing: 100 Grand Bars
If you ask me, the most underrated Halloween candy is the 100 Grand Bar, and nursing is definitely an underrated major. People forget about this chocolate bar because they’re too busy with their Twix, Snickers and Milky Way, just like how some people overlook their nurses in favor of their doctors. However, the medical field would not be the same without its nurses, just like how every Halloween bag needs a 100 Grand Bar.
History: Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars
Another classic Halloween candy, the Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars! Some people may think that both history and Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars are boring, but they couldn’t be further from the truth! There are so many different areas of history to be studied, from Ancient Mediterranean civilizations to Native Americans, from Black, Latin American, and Women’s history to the various wars of the twentieth century! There’s a history topic for everyone, just like there are tons of different Hershey candies, like cookies ‘n’ creme, almonds, and more (and besides, you put Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars in s’mores; you can’t beat that)!
Political Science: Twix Bars
The debate between left and right is definitely heating up, and I’m not just talking about the election! Nope, I mean Twix! With their commercials about “Left Twix vs. Right Twix,” I’m sure that political science majors can relate, comparing the two candidates’ campaigns and their advertisements against each other. So, let’s just agree to disagree, and eat our Twix together on Halloween.
Astronomy: Milky Way
Do I really need to explain this one?
Sport Management: Baby Ruth
This one is also pretty self-explanatory. Baby Ruth sounds like Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth was a baseball player. Baseball is a sport. Enough said.
Math: Nerds
Nerds serve a great purpose. They are a neat and organized candy; no messy fingers, melting chocolate, or pieces of plastic wrapping. They are convenient and great for a quick little treat. And math is the same way (besides the whole “eating” thing, of course)! Everything has rules and follows a certain procedure. It’s a great major that more people should appreciate, and a very good candy too!
Journalism/Communications: Starburst
If you want a juicy story, you go straight to a student from the College of Journalism and Communications. And if you want a juicy Halloween candy, you reach first for a Starburst! You have to dig a little to get to the good stuff (because there are two separate wrappers before the actual candy), but it all pays off once the beautiful truth is revealed for all to see (or the ugly truth, if you got a yellow Starburst). Also, Starburst definitely has eye-catching commercials, and every journalism student knows the importance of a good headline.
Language Majors: Laffy Taffy
If there is one thing that Language majors love, it’s a good pun in the language they study. From English to Spanish, Mandarin to Latin, everyone loves a funny joke, especially one that makes sense in multiple languages. And the signature characteristic of a Laffy Taffy is the pair of jokes written on each wrapper. Whether they make you roll your eyes or genuinely laugh out loud, you cannot deny that those puns are what make the candy and the languages special.
