A Re-Introduction to The Orange Peel

Hi. I’m Anja. I’m 5’7”, 195 pounds, and I have auburn hair and blue eyes; or, if you’re reading my two-year-old acting resume, I’m 5’7”, 170 pounds, and I have blonde hair and blue eyes. To be fair, I was probably 20 pounds more than I thought I was in 2023 – boobs and butt add more weight than you think (humble brag).

This is all to say, a fair bit about me and my life has changed since we were last acquainted. (It’s been around 18 months if you’re counting, but I’m not, because my time is valuable and you should be grateful that I’m even writing this. (I am joking and I am very thankful to the five or so people/mice that read these articles.)) I spent the fall semester of 2024 studying abroad in Ireland, and when I returned home, I was too busy mourning a well-poured Guinness to write anything of substance. Oops!

‘What is this column?’ you ask – a question I find surprising because I thought I’d have gained some level of notoriety by now. At the same time, half of the current UF student population has not been enrolled long enough to witness an Orange Peel publication, so I guess fair enough.

The Orange Peel was UF’s first comedy magazine, launched in the 60s? 70s? Something like that. Because this column is a conglomeration of bits, stories and commentary I find funny, I found the name fitting. However, unlike the original Orange Peel, I am not a group of sexist white men – I am but one humble young woman.

My name is Anja, as I mentioned, and I am in my third and final year of study at UF. I’m an International Studies major and a Mass Communications minor. I’ve always loved comedy – comedy makes me feel like I truly have a place in the world. For Christmas in 2012, I asked Santa for a Weekend Update pop-up set with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler figurines. I think that fact speaks for itself. (I did get the pop-up set, if anyone cares.)

I started The Orange Peel as a creative outlet for myself, as well as for any other members of Prism who wish to contribute. This column has its own writing style and comedy style, which I think is a nice change of pace from the standup, sketches and sitcoms that make up the majority of the comedy world. Not that those are bad, I just don’t have the nepotism to land those types of gigs. Yet.

I hope you like The Orange Peel, and I hope you share it with your friends and foes. If you don’t like it, that’s okay, but please post about it so I can get more attention. Thank you.

Love,

Anja Kristin Danger McJagger Schwarzbauer
