Ben Hill Griffin Stadium was full of excitement for the first Florida football game of the season. The humid, late-summer air was filled with shouts of “Go Gators!” and the Swamp was energetic all night as the Gators topped McNeese State by a score of 49-7.

The excitement and energy of the night was amplified by the debut of new orange and blue LED lights. These lights are part of a more significant $400 million renovation project planned for Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The project will eventually address a number of issues for the 93-year-old stadium. According to an AP report, the upgrades will include “wider concourses, less bench seating, more concession options, larger video boards, a new sound system and improved lighting throughout.” However, one downfall to the project is that seating capacity is expected to be reduced significantly.

The new lights are used throughout the game to help raise the energy in the Swamp to even greater heights and bring out the Gator pride of the crowd. The lights turn on after every Gator touchdown, as well as during the singing of “I Won’t Back Down”.

“I love how the lights change from orange to blue to fit the atmosphere during the “Orange and Blue” chant,” said freshman Honor’s student Ben Shapiro

Florida football is currently 5-2 on the season and the team’s next game at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium will be on Nov. 4 against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Fans will be excited to see the Gators work to continue their five-game home winning streak and continue to see the new lights in action
